Mimi Moseley

A Life of Service and Resilience

Mimi Moseley is a force of good in Redding. She’s a woman who has overcome tragedy and adversity to become an author and respected leader in her community.

Mimi was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1954. When she was two years old, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up during the Civil Rights Movement, and she was inspired by activism. At the age of 13, in the midst of all the conflict, she found strength in the words of Yolanda King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter. Yolanda told her, “You can’t run from your problems - it won’t fix them. You need to stand up for yourself and fight for what you believe in!” These words would inspire her throughout her life.

After high school, she was hired at a popular amusement park, Six Flags Over Georgia, where she met her husband, Marty. He was playing in a bluegrass band and Mimi couldn’t help but fall head-over-heels. They were married in 1978 and have two wonderful sons together.

Mimi’s life has been shaped by both tragedy and triumph. When Mimi was 22 years old, her mother committed suicide. Then, thirty years ago, her brother faced the same death. It was devastating, but Mimi found strength in her friends and family. Mimi’s book entitled, “Arm Around Shoulder/Hand Over Mouth -Ten loving lessons for mothers and daughters-in-law”, was inspired by the warmth and love shown by her mother- in- law when she lost her mother. The message in her book encouraged a close and loving relationship with her family.

Mimi and Marty moved to Redding, California, in 2009. They quickly became involved in the community, volunteering for organizations like One Safe Place, Shasta Library Foundation and Leadership Redding. Mimi’s experience with Leadership Redding, a program focused on raising awareness and educational opportunities for those who want to serve and participate in community decision-making, has been instrumental in shaping her life in Redding. She first completed the program, then became a part of the Steering Committee and now she is an Advisor.

Then, in 2010, she and Marty started their own business, Moseley Family Cellars located in downtown Redding - a winery and tasting room well received by the locals.

Mimi is a passionate advocate for social justice. She has worked to address homelessness in Redding. In 2023, Mimi organized Redding Restart: A Forum on Homelessness. The forum was attended by over 400 people, and it helped to raise awareness of the issue. Mimi is also working to host quarterly events on topics like mental illness and substance abuse.

In her own words: “I’ve been through a lot in my life, but I’ve always found a way to pick myself up and keep going. I’m not afraid to stand up for what I believe in, and I’m always looking for ways to make a difference in the world. I believe that everyone has the power to make a difference, and I hope that my story will inspire others to get involved in their communities.”
