Respite care refers to a short period of rest for primary caregivers. Respite can be for caregivers who want to take a trip or just need to run errands and need someone to stay with their loved one. This type of care can be received inside or outside the home.

This is a caregiving program for those who cannot perform activities of daily living and cannot remain safely in their own home without help. You must qualify for Medi-Cal benefits, be the age of 65 or over and/or are blind or disabled, be a California resident and reside in his/her own home. An in home assessment will be completed by a social worker to determine eligibility and how many hours granted. A person receiving these benefits is responsible for selecting their own caregiver. This is a program through the Shasta County Department of Health And Human Services. Call for more information.

Passages is a caregiver resource center focusing on education and support for those caring for someone suffering from a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Also, short-term respite care, for those who qualify and when funding is available, can be provided in the home to relieve the primary caregiver. Call for more information.
OUTSIDE THE HOME
You can also choose to place your loved one in an assisted living facility/residential care for respite care. Some specialize in memory care. These are 24-hour non-medical care facilities. They will typically be able to accommodate someone for respite as long as there is an available room and the pre-admission requirements are completed (Physician’s Report & Tuberculosis Test). The cost for respite in a care home is a rate you pay per day and can range from $135-$250. Some will have a one-two week minimum stay.
